Vern Ester Barrett was the first-born child of Bishop Tyree Barrett and his wife, Queen Ester Walker Barrett of Palestine, Texas. Born December 4, 1934, she grew up in that rural community and attended the local schools. An exceptional student, she graduated high school there, and studied nursing at Texas College in Tyler, Texas. Early in life, she accepted Christ as Savior, was baptized at Mount Comfort AME Church by Reverend B. Beason.
Vern met and fell in love with a handsome gentleman, Britton P. Mallard; following an extended courtship, they united in holy wedlock.
The Mallards settled in Fort Worth, Texas, uniting with Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Reverend Albert E. Chew. Vern served faithfully more than fifty years in church ministries, including Sunday School, Sanctuary Choir, Mission, Usher Board, Greeters, Courtesy and Welcoming Committee, Benevolent Committee and Roaring Sixties Fellowship.
A personable and friendly member more than fifty years, she was always meticulously attired in one of her resplendent outfits. accessorized with tasteful jewelry and a queenly hat.
Vern had previously been employed by Harris Hospital and the Oakridge School. She was a hardworking entrepreneur who operated Expert Cleaners more than twenty-one years. In addition, she was a long-time supporter of Jubilee Theater.
At the close of a beautiful life, a loving mother and grandmother, devoted Christian worker, astute businesswoman and dear friend entered her promised rest. In the morning hours on September 3, 2022, the Lord Jesus called his faithful servant and she answered.
She is cherished forever in memory by her daughters, Barbara Crockett and Jacquelyn Mallard; grandchildren, Latoya Crockett, Maseon Crockett and Brittny Crockett; great-grandchildren, Jiibritten Valentine and Corday Franklin; brother and sisters: Artis Barrett (Valencia), Odessa Session, Pastor Lawrence Barrett (Rebecca), Pastor E. Charles Barrett (Ida), Bennie Barrett (Janice), Dianna Miles (Glenn), Thomas Barrett (Sharon), a host of other relatives and friends
