Verna Lee Bennett (Halbert)

Verna Lee Bennett, 78, of Austin, Texas, passed away on March 27, 2026. She was born on June 19, 1947, in Fresno, California, to Leroy Halbert and Altamae Langworthy Halbert, both of whom preceded her in death.

Verna proudly served her country in the United States Army as a Medical Corpsman with the rank of PVT E-1. She was a true all-American veteran who loved her nation deeply. After her military service, she lived in Odessa, Texas for approximately 20 years before relocating to Austin, Texas, where she spent her remaining years happily surrounded by family and the things she loved.

Verna was a woman of deep Pentecostal faith who remained faithful to God throughout her life. She found great joy in caring for God's creation-especially animals. She had a special love for dogs and horses, and she was a talented horse rider and devoted caretaker. Her gentle spirit extended to her incredible gardening skills; she possessed a mysterious green thumb and took pride in nurturing beautiful plants and flowers.

She is survived by her daughters, Leslie Conn, Helen Vernon and Terry Peek (Daughter); son, Lee Bennett; three grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Altamae Halbert.

Verna will be remembered as a strong, loving mother and grandmother who lived with quiet faith, patriotic pride, and a deep appreciation for the natural world around her. Her family will cherish the memories of her green thumb in full bloom, her time in the saddle, and the unconditional love she showed to every animal and every person she held dear.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family at a later date.
