Verna Bernice (Skare) Grove was born on September 15, 1924 in Elk Lake Township, MN to Helmer and Helen (Olson) Skare. She was baptized on November 27, 1924 in a church in Barrett and confirmed at Lincoln Lutheran Church on June 19, 1938 in Elk Lake Township. Verna went to Elk Lake Town Hall for elementary school and graduated from Barrett High School in June 3, 1943. Verna was united in marriage to Lester Grove on September 25, 1943 at a parsonage in Barrett. To this union the couple was blessed with 4 children, Verle, Larry, Darrell and Lori. The couple rented a farm north of Hoffman for a year and then bought a farm in the late 1940?s (7 miles SW of Evansville on Co Rd 25). Verna enjoyed working on the farm with Lester, milking the cows, driving tractor and bailing hay. Lester died in 1990, Verna sold the farm in 1992 and moved to Evansville. In October of 2011, Verna moved to Grand Arbor in Alexandria and was one of the first residents. Verna was very involved being a leader with 4-H, and with the ladies aid at church. She enjoyed doing crafts and playing cards especially thirty-one. Verna loved Minnesota sports and going to a Twins game each summer. She also loved being involved with the grandchildren?s sports. The grandchildren would always call Grandma to let her know how the game went. Verna died on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria at the age of 88. She is survived by her sons, Verle (Carolyn) of Vancouver, WA, Larry (Donna) of Yuma, AZ, and Darrell of Evansville; daughter, Lori (Martin) Tonn of Moorhead; grandchildren, Kaari (Marc) Tattar, Jason (Julie) Grove, Larry Jr. (Heidi) Grove, Kim Grove, Ryan Grove, Kristin Grove, Kayla (Ryan) Dickelman, Krista Tonn, Katie Tonn, Kelli Tonn, and Karissa Tonn; great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Allison Tattar; Lindsey, Abigail and Thomas Grove; Benett Grove; and Mikael, Madelyn and Makynli Dickelman; brothers, Orlin (Betty) Skare of Columbia Falls, MT and LuVerne (Shirley) Skare of Hoffman; brother-in-law, Harris (Avis) Endreson of Columbia Falls, MT; and many nieces and nephews. Verna is preceded in death by her parents, Helmer and Helen; husband, Lester; sister, Delores Endreson; and sister-in-law, Arlene Skare. A funeral service was held on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Lincoln Lutheran Church in Elk Lake Township with Reverend Kathryn Rothman officiating. Reader was Linda Petty. Music was provided by organist, Tricia Saulsbury. Interment was in the Lincoln Lutheran Cemetery. Casket bearers were Verna?s grandchildren, Kaari Tattar, Larry Grove Jr., Jason Grove, Kim Grove, Kayla Dickelman, Krista Tonn. Honorary casket bearers were Verna?s grandchildren, Katie, Kelli and Karissa Tonn, and Ryan and Kristin Grove. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria
