Vernita Fields Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Superior Funeral Home Hollywood Chapel - Memphis on Feb. 5, 2026.
Vernita Lillian Fields was born on October 10, 1948, to the late Walter James Fields and Rosa (Rosie) Graham Fields in Memphis, Tennessee. She was gently called by God to her eternal resting home on January 20, 2026. She received Christ at an early age at the Hunter Avenue Baptist Church and later years joined the Golden Leaf Baptist Church where she worked with the Children's Church ministry. Vernita was a relentless prayer warrior for her family and those who knew her. In recent years, she was a member of Greater Imani Church.

Vernita received her secondary education from Douglas High School in Memphis, TN and graduated in 1966. She attended University of Memphis where she graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1970. While at the University of Memphis, Vernita was part of the charter line and pledged the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. Her professional employment was working for the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) where she worked for 35 years in various positions that included Operational Manager, Tax Examiner and Appeals Account Resolution Specialist. She retired from IRS in 2007. She enjoyed her neighbors and community services that included working as a Volunteer for the St. Francis Hospital.

Vernita was a loving daughter and sister, who always enthusiastically supported the family. Her family's needs and aspirations became her mission to help achieve their personal, educational and professional goals. She passionately and actively participated in family activities and events. She loved having fun with the family and had a hearty laughter. She was also quiet and private but never hesitated to provide moral and financial support to her family and others. She was the family's guardian angel. Vernita's love for the Lord was her foundation, and we will always love and cherish her memories.

Vernita was preceded in death by her parents, Walter James Fields and Rosa (Rosie) Graham Fields and brother, Robert Lee Fields. She leaves to cherish her memories three sisters: Vernaria Fields of Fredericksburg, VA., Patricia Fields of Memphis, TN., and Juanita Fields Middleton, Esquire (Stewart) of Charleston, SC.; one brother-in-law Dr. Stewart Middleton (Juanita) of Charleston, SC.; nephew, Dr. Stewart D Middleton II of High Point, NC.; niece, Michelle Fields Johnson (Frederick); nephew-in-law, Dr. Frederick Johnson (Michelle) of Fredericksburg, VA; grandnephew, Frederick Johnson Jr and grandniece, Faith Michelle Johnson of Fredericksburg, VA.; and a host of loving cousins, relatives and friends.
