Vernita Hood Smith, a radiant soul, gracefully departed from this world on December 8, 2024. Born on May 6, 1947, in the vibrant city of Nashville, Tennessee, she was the cherished daughter of the late Samual and Rosa Lee Jones. Her only sibling, Emeer Ashard (Curtis Alan Gillespie,Sr.), also preceded her in death, leaving a loving legacy that continues to inspire those who remember them both.

She is profoundly missed by her devoted husband, Charles Randolph Smith, and her beloved children: Victor (Ronah) Alan Hood, Kevin (Yolanda) Lamont Hood, and Heather (Omaràn) Lee, Jeff (Amanda) Smith, Pamelia Smith. Vernita's spirit lives on through her thirteen adoring grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, along with a multitude of cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins, each holding a special memory of her love.

Vernita's journey of learning began at Pearl High School, where her musical talent soared as she played the violin in the concert band. She furthered her education by earning a degree in Business Administration from Draughons College. Her life took her to places like Glasgow, Montana, and Knoxville, Tennessee, yet she always returned to Nashville with her young family. There, she embarked on a remarkable career with Dupont Corporation, dedicating over 30 years to the company and retiring as a respected executive.

For many years, she led volunteer work at Jones Paideia Elementary School, with Operation Andrew and United 4 Hope. Vernita coordinated the Dove Tree initiative at 15th Ave Missionary Baptist Church, and played an essential role in the Women’s Sisterhood. She relished traveling with 50+ and Forever Young.

In her retirement, Vernita embraced her adventurous spirit, exploring the globe and celebrating diverse cultures. Affectionately known as "Ma" by her children, she was a steadfast perfectionist, consistently encouraging her loved ones to strive for excellence. As a true sports enthusiast, she enjoyed spirited discussions about the latest NFL games and immersed herself in the excitement of professional tennis.

Vernita Hood Smith may have departed this earth too soon, but she has woven a legacy that inspires through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—a powerful testament to her love, dedication, and vibrant spirit that will forever resonate in their hearts.
