Vernon Jay Boon, of Sumas, passed away on their family farm Monday, February 19, 2024, after an 8-month battle with cancer. This is the farm Vernon's parents Thys and Minnie Boon brought him home to after he was born on October 17, 1951. It's where he learned about hard work and chores before attending Sumas Christian School and then Lynden Christian High School. It's the same farm he brought his bride Betty Van Loo home to shortly after they married in Randolph, Wisconsin on November 23, 1982. It's the same farm where they raised their two children. And yes, 72 years after he began his life there, it's where Vernon took his last breath. Their family farm, Evergreen Dairy.
Vernon farmed his entire life, and though small in stature he was strong and worked hard. In his later years Vernon had a candy machine route and was known as the Candy Man. He was a member of and served as deacon at the Sumas Christian Reformed Church.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 41 years, Betty of Sumas, daughter Stacy and son Ryan both of Sumas; and grandchildren Nevaeh, Frank, Nayeli, Cruz, and Abel. He will be greatly missed by his brothers Keith (Karen), Dale (Janet), and Ron (Kathy), his wife Betty's family, and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and his parents-in law.
A private family graveside service will be Saturday, February 28 at 1 p.m. in Monumenta Cemetery followed by a 2 p.m. memorial service at Sumas Christian Reformed Church.
Vernon liked to wear Wrangler jeans and western shirts. So, feel free to wear that to his service. He would enjoy that!
In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested to Whatcom Hospice Foundation, Gift Processing Lockbox #1097, PO Box 35146, Seattle, WA 98124-5146 or https://whatcomhospice.org/donate-online
A special thank you to dear friend, Spud for his love, prayers, and daily visits and the Whatcom Hospice House staff for their amazing care and support for 5 months.
Vernon was a very contented person and a word that he often used was "Whatever".
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
