Vernon Dean Lutz was born at home on January 2, 1935, to Paul and Hulda (Hantelman) Lutz. He grew up on a farm five miles north of Denison, Iowa, in Goodrich Township. Vernon attended rural school and later pursued some high school education. During his 10th-grade year, he spent time at Denison High School before leaving to help on the family farm. He was baptized in Christ on January 30, 1935 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on March 22, 1951.

After spending some time working on the family farm, Vernon took a job assisting with the installation of rural electric service, which led him to work in Utah for several months. In January 1957, he joined the Army and served for nine months in Korea. He was honorably discharged in December 1958.

On August 16, 1959, Vernon married Janice Schwanz. After working various jobs in Omaha, he moved to a farm northeast of Schleswig to begin his farming career. In 1962, he purchased his own farm west of Kiron, where he and Janice raised their three children. In 1985, they moved into the town of Kiron.

Throughout his farming career, Vernon also worked with the Kiron grain elevator and drove for Boyens Trucking Company. He was always willing to lend a hand to area farmers, generously giving his time and assistance. He enjoyed socializing with friends and family at local establishments and occasionally made trips to the casino, sometimes joining friends for the outing.

Vernie passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025 having attained the age of 90 years, two months and 12 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Clarence (KIA in WWII), Arthur, Alfred, Donald, and Marion; and one great grandchild, Bryceton Herrera.

Vernie is survived by wife, Janice (Schwanz) Lutz of Kiron; three children: Jeff and his wife Lana (Pesuad) Lutz of Waverly; Jeanne and her husband Andy Wollberg of Kearney, NE; Kevin and his wife Deb (Bryson) Lutz of Collinsville, OK; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; brother, Ervin Lutz of Denison; two sisters-in-law, Judy (Donnie) Kragel of Ute and Linda Renaud of McMinnville, OR; other relatives and friends.

Visitation with Family Greeting Friends will be on Thursday, March 20, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Funeral Services will be Friday, March 21, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Kiron. Military Honors will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery.
