WILLIAMSPORT - Vernon H. Porter, born on July 8, 1939, in Williamsport, passed away peacefully at his residence in Williamsport on July 15, 2025, at the age of 86. A life dedicated to public service and faith.

Vernon graduated from Williamsport Area High School in 1957 where he belonged to the Friendship Club before serving his country honorably in the United States Army. On June 7, 1963, he married the love of his life, the former Sara J. Andrews, with whom he shared 49 wonderful years until her passing in 2012. Together, they built a family rooted in love and faith.

Vernon's career was a testament to his commitment to serving others. He dedicated 20 years to the Williamsport Police Department from 1964 to 1984, where he worked tirelessly to protect and serve his community. Following his time with the police department, he continued his service as a corrections officer at SCI- Muncy from 1985 until his retirement in 1999.

A man of deep faith, Vernon was an Elder at the Williamsport Congregation of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. He found joy in meeting people and sharing God's word, often visiting prisons for faith outreach.

Vernon was also an avid sports watcher, finding joy in the camaraderie and excitement of the games. Above all, he cherished his family, who were the center of his world.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sara J. Porter; his parents, William and Mabel (Fitzgerald) Porter; and his siblings, William, George, and Wayne Porter, Inez Stanton, and J. Marlene Whaley.

Vernon is survived by his loving daughters, Karen M. Porter of Williamsport; Melissa L. (Hubert) James of Port Orange, FL; and Holly L. Porter of Hiram, GA. He was a proud grandfather to five granddaughters and two grandsons, and a great-grandfather to three great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.

A Homegoing service to celebrate Vernon's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 773 Cemetery Rd., Williamsport, with Elder Denny Foote officiating. Family and friends are invited to attend a public viewing from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Maneval Allen Redmond Cremation & Funeral Home, 500 W. Fourth St., Williamsport.

I would just like to state that one of the pleasant memories of living in williamport was the friendship I had with Vern. What a nice guy !
We both worked in the criminal justice system and shared concerns about it. A saint in my opinion. Best to his family. Henry Hopper
