Our wife, mother, and grandmother, Vicky Elaine Griffin Stover, age 80, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
Vicky was born on September 6, 1945 in Monroe County, North Carolina to Mary Methel Martin and James Warren Griffin. As an only child, her parents doted on her and made her the center of their world, so much so that when Vicky and her family moved to Utah, they followed her and moved to Spanish Fork shortly after so that they could be near her and her children.
Vicky was raised in Marshville, NC where she loved helping her mom take care of her bedridden grandmother. She was raised to be tough, evident in growing up in a home with no indoor plumbing. They were self-sufficient and grew all of their own food, so she was often found working in their large garden or milking their cows. Another favorite childhood pastime was fishing with her mom and dad in their little boat or going to the beach. As an only child, she was inseparable with her cousin Judy, and they remained very close her entire life. Beyond her love of the outdoors, she had a lifetime passion for music. At an early age, she began playing the piano. She rarely used sheet music and was able to play skillfully by ear. That musical gift was also seen in her beautiful singing voice, and she used that gift often to sing in choirs and to her family.
Vicky graduated from Forest Grove High School in 1963, always bragging that it was the same high school that Randy Travis graduated from. During High School she met John Edward Stover, Jr. on a blind date and they married shortly after on June 15, 1963. They had four children, two sons and two daughters. After joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in North Carolina, they moved to Mapleton, Utah in 1975. One year later they were sealed in the Provo Temple on June 15, 1976. While her children were growing up, Vicky drove a school bus for Nebo School District so she could have the same hours as they did. After her children were all grown, she went to work at the Orem Post Office, where she met and took care of many people over the years.
After the passing of her first husband in 2017, she married a longtime family friend from Ireland, Denis Drewery, on January 18, 2022. He showed her what true love and devotion from a husband looks like, and lovingly took care of her every day of their 4 years together. Her children want to express their heartfelt appreciation to him for his devotion and care of Vicky. They also express their gratitude to the many doctors and nurses who cared for her during her illness.
In addition to her husband, Denis, Vicky is survived by her four children: John Stover (Jacque), Sharon Smith (Steve), Chris Stover (Erika), and Mary Ellen Messick (Shad); her 14 grandchildren; and her cousin Judy. She is preceded in death by her first husband, John Edward Stover Jr., and beloved mother and father, James and Mary.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 11 am at the Mapleton LDS Church, located at 1050 N 300 W, Mapleton. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral at 9:00 am. Interment will be at Spanish Fork Cemetery.
