Victoria Shechter Catlin, 71, of Merriam, KS, passed away February 28, 2024. Victoria was born in Moline, Illinois; the family ultimately moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1956.
Victoria had always been an artist, and poet interested in writing, drawing, music and most of all acting.
During high school she spent a year in Mexico, learning and living the culture. Then traveling to the Yucatan and Guatemala.
Victoria began her acting career at an early age, joining The Kansas City Repertory Experimental Theater Company and then the Chicago Free Street Theater. Her love for her art only grew more. After college, Victoria moved to San Francisco to study with Leonard Pitt. Here she had the unique opportunity to study with one of the most famous mime artists in the world, Marcel Marceau. Soon after, she moved to Los Angeles where she pursued stage, television and movies. Victoria played numerous important roles in television productions such as: "Blackie" in the original Twin Peaks, Amazing Stories, Soap and many more. Her movie credits include: Ghoulies, Maid to Order and Howling V: The Rebirth, and Slow Burn. Victoria did not only perform in television and movies, but loved performing on stage. She was involved for 2 years with the Odyssey Theater Ensemble in Los Angeles. In 1978, Victoria was fortunate to play "Guera" in the internationally acclaimed production of "Zoot Suit" at the Los Angeles Mark Taper Forum. As a result of this play, Victoria and the other three primary cast were featured on the cover of the New York Times magazine.
Victoria was involved with local and national politics as well as numerous non-profit organizations: City of Hope, American Cancer Society, Glendale Boys Home and Ranch to name a few. She also worked as photo editor for the Disney Channel, and for various companies as script consultant, co-producer, etc. For the past 20 years, she has reviewed movies for the Academy Awards.

I don't know what compelled me to do a search for Victoria this evening, but when I did, and saw she had passed, it came as a shock. Very sad. I met Victoria in 1984, when I was 23. She headed the press library for the one-year-old Disney Channel, and I was a temp hired to be her assistant. We had quite the task of compiling and organizing all of the press clippings for the Disney Channel when it launched. Back then, everything was done manually, and with paper. No computers. She was a mentor to me. She showed me the ways of working in offices and how to succeed and grow. I left the assignment when my task was complete. Three years later, I received a call from City of Hope. A friend of Victoria's was looking for someone to work in the fundraising office, and she referred me. That reference started a chain of careers which, 37 years later, has gotten me where I am today. I have had a lot of successes, all because of that launch from Victoria. I remember the after hours chats we had in the office. I learned a lot from her and was grateful. When I saw her performance as Blackie O'Reilly on "Twin Peaks", I was proud of her. Just a few episodes, but she made an impact. Blackie is an iconic character. I frequently wondered about her and where her life had taken her. It is sad to hear she had died. Far too young. I hope she had a good life.

This is my second attempt writing about Victoria, my dear friend. We met as kids and became friends in high school. She was kind and had a generous spirit. That spirit remained part of my life for decades. She emailed with me even when she was in the hospital and I was in Boston. I lost touch with her while I was there, but not our connection. It took some weeks for me to find her obituary. She endured years of pain with grace and dignity. I wish her everlasting peace now, free of pain. I miss you dear friend.

Victoria was the first great love of my life. Before that, she was one of my very best friends and the Shechter family, one of the most formative ones of my early life. I grieve her as if all of that were yesterday. In fact, the entire Molton family feels her loss today. But she was a rare and luminous person and artist, a woman driven to seek justice and inspire others as the purpose of her art and her very life. We love you "V" and we will miss you forever. Stephen Molton, Pamela Galvin, Warren, Jennifer and David Molton, and all their spouses....
