Vinnie Mae Marshall, 79, of
Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Hungerford, Texas on December 16, 1945, Vinnie dedicated her life to serving others, living as a vessel of love.
Vinnie's calling to care for others began early in life when she moved to California during high school to informally care for her younger sister, Bessie Miller. After graduating in California, she returned to Houston, where she would meet and marry John Marshall, the love of her life. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and service to the many communities they touched.
As a certified nursing assistant, Vinnie spent her career compassionately caring for scores of people, including the elderly and adults with intellectual disabilities. Her dedication to helping others extended beyond her professional life, as she took an active and leading role driving initiatives that impacted various local communities through the church, approaching this work with joy and fullness of heart.
In the late 1980s, John and Vinnie moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where they adopted their beloved son, Jason. Vinnie's nurturing spirit made her a natural mentor to everyone she encountered, from immediate family members to complete strangers. She possessed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge, always ready with thoughtful advice and guidance in a sweet, soft-spoken delivery.
A devoted Houston Astros fan, Vinnie never missed a game and enjoyed collecting sports memorabilia. Her other passions included reading (everything from the Bible to mystery novels), journaling, cooking with loved ones, and attending services and community events as a long-standing member of Windsor Village UMC. Additionally, Vinnie was an active participant in the Diamonds and Pearls ministry and Telecare ministry at Windsor Village.
Above all, Vinnie personified love. Everything she did was rooted in genuine care and compassion for others, especially those closest to her. The bond she shared with her five younger sisters was deeply meaningful, embracing the role of "Big Sister" from a young age to the end of her life. A powerhouse for good, Vinnie's legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through her service, wisdom, and love.
Vinnie was preceded in death by her husband, John Marshall; brother, Robert Payne Jr.; father, Robert Payne Sr.; mother, Beatrice Payne; and other beloved family members.
She is survived by her son, Jason Marshall (Clare Robinson); five sisters, Geneva Payne, Ora L. Woods, Deloris Brown, Bessie Miller, and Joyce A. Matthews (Earnest Matthews); two grandchildren, Sloane Marshall (2) and Blaise Marshall (1); and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
A celebration of Vinnie's life will be held on Saturday, August 30, at Windsor Village UMC in
Houston, Texas. The viewing will begin at 12:00 PM, followed by the celebration of live service at 1:00 PM. Burial will immediately follow at Peach Creek Cemetery in Wharton, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the
