Virgil Eubanks Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Edwards Funeral Home & Cremations - Kinston on Dec. 2, 2025.
Virgil Lee Eubanks, 84, of Kinston, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025. Born September 17, 1941, to the late Guy Thornton Eubanks and Mary Waters Eubanks, Virgil lived a life dedicated to family, entrepreneurship, and community service.
A visitation will begin at 1:00 pm on December 6, 2025, at Gordon Street Christian Church, Kinston, followed by a celebration of life at 2:00 pm officiated by Reverend Dr. Laura Wood.
Virgil began a business career in the mid-1960s, working in the banking industry before transitioning to real estate. Within a few years, Virgil utilized his entrepreneurial skills to start a business venture by the name of Ram Neuse Mobile Homes. Over several decades, he assisted families across North Carolina with housing needs, building relationships all along the way. Virgil's larger-than-life personality, coupled with his work ethic, led to successful outcomes, all for the benefit of his family and community.
A star athlete in baseball and football from Jones Senior High School, Virgil continued his love of sports throughout the 1970s by leading Ram Neuse Mobile Homes to countless United States Slo-pitch Softball Association (USSSA) tournament victories. His Ram Neuse softball club won the 1975 NC State Championship in addition to competing in multiple World Series tournaments. In 1979, Virgil became recognized as the individual who put Kinston on the map as the softball capital by coordinating the Grand Slam of Softball, three major tournaments featuring the greatest softball players to ever play the game. In 1980, he was presented the USSSA Award of Merit. The pinnacle of Virgil's sports career occurred with his induction to the USSSA Hall of Fame of Softball in January 2024.
In his later years, Virgil spent as much time as possible at his beloved Greene Acres Farm in Jones County. The farm brought Virgil great happiness, taking him back to his youthful horse-riding days. Being a cowboy was just part of life for Virgil.
He is survived by daughter Joy Elizabeth Eubanks; son Russell Virgil Eubanks (partner Melissa Mattocks); and grandson Miles Westbrook Eubanks. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Lucille Greene Eubanks, and eight siblings – Guy Jr., Eugene, Edward, Elbert, Ada, Evelyn, Elizabeth, and Rachel.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Gordon Street Christian Church. 118 E Gordon St, Kinston, NC 28501.
