Virgil M. Haney, 87, of Columbia, Tennessee, passed away on March 11, 2023. Virgil was born to the late Jimmie Hudson Haney and Marzee Sudberry Haney on November 3, 1935 in Lewisburg Tennessee. He graduated from Forest High School in Chapel Hill and later served in the US Army. Virgil retired from Monsanto after working there for over 30 years.
Virgil had a love for all sports. In his youth, he was drawn to football; however, he was well known for his baseball and softball accomplishments throughout his life. Virgil played with the Columbia Blue Socks and Monsanto Maulers, along with several other softball teams. He was known for his outstanding pitching and for his many years of coaching.
Virgil had a passion for the outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing. He was an avid quail hunter and an excellent wing shot. He also enjoyed gardening and farming.
In the years before his passing, some of his happiest moments included watching his grandson play baseball and beating his other grandchildren at checkers.
Virgil is survived by his children; Virgil H. Haney of Spring Hill, Marsha (Ryan) Thatcher of St. George, Utah and Tim (Cheryl) Huckaby of Columbia; 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Tom Haney and Jim Haney.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Morrow, Ryan Thatcher, Hayden Haney, Kolton Huckaby, Logan Thatcher and John Alsup.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1:00 PM at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Mike Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at the Allen Cemetery in Caney Springs with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 5:00 - 8:00 PM and Thursday from 12:00 - 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.
