On April 23, 1962, he was united in marriage to Rita Albenesius and together, they raised their seven children in the Jackson area. Virgil supported his family as an iron worker, mostly in the Sioux City area, where he helped construct the Siouxland skyline.
He was an avid gardener after his retirement. He was proud to share his produce, especially sauerkraut and tomato juice, with his family and friends. His peanut brittle was legendary during the holidays. He loved to attend all his grandchildren’s activities. He was an avid Nebraska Football fan and enjoyed many family gatherings watching the Huskers.
Virgil loved watching his children grow up and being active in their lives. He was very active in coaching them in baseball, basketball, and softball. He and Rita made it a priority to take their seven children on an annual vacation. They enjoyed spending winters in Texas for nearly 20 years. Virgil was immensely proud that all his children obtained college degrees. His children always considered him one of their best friends.
Virgil was an active member of the St. Patrick’s Church and the Hearty-McNally American Legion Post in Jackson. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus where he was honored as having the Family of the Year. Virgil was proud to be a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters where he held multiple officer positions for over thirty-five years and attended many national conventions.
