Virgil Phillips Obituary
Reverend Virgil Phillips, 74, went home to be with the Lord on January 13, 2026, after a long and courageous journey with illness.
Virgil was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and faithful servant of God. He was married for nearly 50 years to his beloved wife, Judy Lee Phillips, whom he cherished deeply. Their lives and ministries were intertwined, and it brings great comfort to know they are now reunited in Heaven.
Virgil faithfully served the Lord as an Ordained Bishop in the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee) for many years. He was a church planter and shepherd, answering God's call wherever it led. He founded and pastored Groveport Church of God, and also served as pastor at Washington Court House Church of God, Lucasville Church of God, Jackson Church of God, Frebis Avenue / House of Blessings Church of God and Logan Church of God. Throughout his ministry, he was known for his steady leadership, deep compassion for people, and unwavering commitment to preaching the Word of God.
He had a true heart for souls and a passion for outreach. His heart for soul-winning and compassionate service left a lasting impact on countless lives.
Virgil was also a proud United States Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. He carried his service with honor, strength, and humility.
His life was marked by perseverance, strength, and an unwavering trust in God, even through seasons of physical suffering. Though illness changed many aspects of his later years, it never diminished his faith or the deep love he held for his family and his Lord and Savior.
Virgil was a loving father to his children and a devoted grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, generosity, and love that will continue through generations.
Virgil is survived by his children: Kim Bryan (Greg), Lisa Birtcher, and Stephen Phillips (Katie); and his grandchildren: Shelby and Bailey Skaggs; Austin and Blake Birtcher; and EvaKate and Hudson Phillips. He is also survived by his brother, Paul (Diane) Phillips of Pomeroy, and his sister, Florence Couchie of Middleport, along with extended family, church family, fellow veterans, and many friends whose lives were deeply impacted by his ministry and example.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy Lee Phillips; his parents, Orville and Lula Phillips; his brothers, Eugene Phillips, Earl Phillips, Wetzel Phillips, and Orville Phillips; and his sister, June Mayes.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 PM at Connection Pointe Church of God, located at 4325 Harrisburg Pike, Grove City, Ohio 43123.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM, also at Connection Pointe Church of God, officiated by Reverend Ron Branham. Funeral procession to follow to Fernwood Cemetery.
While our hearts grieve his passing, we rejoice in the promise of eternal life and take comfort in knowing this is not goodbye, but until we meet again.
