Virginia Kerwood Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chapman Funeral Home - Hurricane on Jan. 17, 2026.
Virginia "Weesie" Louise Kerwood 68, of Hurricane, WV, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, following an extended illness.

Born on December 3, 1958, Weesie was the daughter of the late Sidney Marvin Powell and Virginia Louise "Jenny" Powell. After her biological father's passing, her mother remarried, and Weesie was lovingly raised by her parents, Harold and Jenny Powell Martin. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brothers, Sidney M. Powell Jr. and Pat Powell.

Weesie was truly an angel on this earth. She had a heart bigger than most, loved everyone she met, and never knew a stranger. Her kindness, warmth, and genuine care for others left a lasting impact on all who were blessed to know her, and it is safe to say that everyone who knew Weesie loved her right back.

She was a proud graduate of Hurricane High School and devoted many years of her life to serving others as a special needs teacher's assistant. She especially cherished her time working at Winfield High School, where her patience, compassion, and gentle spirit touched countless students and coworkers alike. Weesie found great purpose in helping others and did so with grace and love.

Family meant everything to Weesie. She loved spending time with her loved ones, cooking meals to share, and making sure everyone felt welcome and cared for. She and her husband enjoyed bowling together and spent many years participating in different bowling leagues, creating lasting friendships along the way. Her home, and her heart, were always open.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Gary D. Kerwood; her son, Earin Kerwood (Ashley) of Hurricane, WV; her daughter, Brittany Coleman (Steve) of Charleston, WV; her grandchildren: Jenny Martin (Dario), Earin "Bub" Kerwood (Gianna), Zane Kerwood, Malachi Kerwood, Lilly Bright, Brantley Bright, and Kassidy Bright; and her great-grandchildren: Ja'Kai Toole and Dario Martin II. She is also survived by her brother, C.W. Powell of Hurricane, WV, along with many close friends and the many children she lovingly welcomed into her life along the way.

Friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, WV.

A Graveside Service will follow at Staten Chapel Church Cemetery in Milton, WV.
