Virginia Ophelia Segrest Hughson

Virginia Ophelia Segrest Hughson, age 77, of Jackson, Mississippi, passed away in Aubrey, Texas, on November 2, 2025. She was born on June 27, 1948, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, the daughter of John Charles Segrest, Sr., and Pauline Hyer Segrest. She grew up in Hermanville, Mississippi, graduated from Port Gibson High School in 1966, graduated Mississippi University for Women in 1970, and earned a masters degree from Peabody College (now Vanderbilt) in library science in 1974. She taught in schools in Beaumont, Texas, and Columbus, Mississippi, and worked as a medical librarian for the University of Mississippi Medical School, retiring in 2008 as associate professor emeritus.
Virginia was devoted to her family and friends; she was loyal, supportive, and kind with a quick wit. She served her profession as a member of the Medical Library Association. Her interest in history manifested itself in her genealogical research, membership in First Families of Mississippi, and volunteer work at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. She believed in the benefits of education and served on the Mississippi University for Women Foundation Board of Directors and was awarded the MUW Alumni Service Award in 2022. She was a member of McLaurin Heights Methodist Church.
She was predeceased by her parents, her brother John Segrest, Jr., and brother-in-law Tom Wiemann.
Remaining to cherish her memory are her devoted sister Connie Segrest Wiemann, sister-in-law Bitsy Segrest, nephew Chuck Wiemann, nieces Leigh Ann Wiemann and Jenny Davis, and a host of beloved cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a great-great nephew.
A visitation will be held on November 15th from 10:00-12:00 at Glenwood Funeral Home in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and the graveside service will be at 1:30 at Shelton Cemetery in Hazlehurst, Mississippi.
