Dr. Vivian Janet Thornton passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, as a resident of Lawrenceville, Georgia, at the age of 88. She was born on October 19, 1937, in Villa Ridge, Illinois, and lived a life defined by faith, scholarship, service, and compassionate leadership.
Vivian pursued higher education with extraordinary dedication, earning a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University, a Master of Science in Nursing from Wayne State University, a Master of Arts from the University of Detroit, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Wayne State University. Her commitment to learning was lifelong and deeply influential, shaping both her professional career and her personal calling to uplift others.
She was actively involved with the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, and the Visiting Nurse Association, generously giving her time and expertise in service to her community. Professionally, Vivian served with distinction as Dean of Math, Dean of Science, and Dean of Allied Health from 1987 to 1999, where she was widely respected for her leadership, vision, and unwavering standards of excellence.
A devoted Christian, Vivian Janet Thornton embodied leadership and motivation—a truly beautiful scholar. She inspired countless individuals to pursue their lifelong goals, earning a reputation as a trailblazer with exceptional intellect and grace. Within her family, she was the counselor, confidant, and guiding light, always offering wisdom, encouragement, and a comforting shoulder to cry on.
Vivian is survived by her beloved children, son LaDarryl Carlos Thornton and daughter Gina Evans, who carry forward her legacy of strength, compassion, and purpose.
A private interment will be held at East Shadowlawn Memorial Gardens.
Vivian Janet Thornton’s life was a testament to faith, education, and service. Her influence will continue to be felt in the lives she touched, the paths she cleared, and the love she so freely gave.
