Vivian Hung Wang
Vivian was born on November 29, 1934, in Guangdong, China, the eighth of twelve children in a three-generation Christian family. As a young girl in Hong Kong, she displayed a heart devoted to serving the Lord and others.
After high school, she followed her calling into ministry, earning a Bachelor's in Religious Education from Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary in 1953. She then directed the Chuk Yuen Village Social Service Center in Kowloon, where her compassion for those in need began to shine.
In 1960, Vivian came to the U.S. to continue her theological studies at Golden Gate Theological Seminary, where she reunited with her former classmate, Johnny Wang. Their shared love for God grew into a lifelong partnership that would last for over 60 years. They married on June 3, 1961. Both graduated in 1963, the year Johnny was ordained.
Together, they were called to serve the Chinese-speaking community in the Bay Area--helping pioneer a fellowship in San Jose, then in 1965, leading San Francisco Chinese independent Baptist Church in Chinatown. In the 1970s, their vision to reach families in the Sunset District led to the founding of Sunset Chinese Baptist Church.
Vivian worked at Bank of America for twenty-five years, supporting both her family and the ministry. She balanced her roles as wife, mother, and working professional with grace and quiet strength.
She and Johnny raised two children, their daughter Margret passed away in 1977, a sorrow that tested but never broke Vivian's faith. Their son Eugene and daughter-in-law Suzanne blessed them with two grandchildren, Ian and Jasmine, whom Vivian lovingly helped care for every day.
After Johnny's retirement in 1995, the couple served two years as missionaries in Macau, ministering to Chinese factory workers and sharing God's love through practical care -- Vivian would prepare snacks to comfort the homesick workers. Later, they went on mission trips through Chinese Christian Mission, where Johnny served as General Secretary. Vivian's gentle humor, thoughtfulness, and hospitality made everyone feel at home. She found joy in serving others, praying for them, and playing hymns on the piano while Johnny sang beside her.
In 2018, she bravely underwent triple bypass surgery, saying she wanted to recover so she could keep caring for her husband. Her strength came from deep faith, not fearlessness.
After Johnny's passing in 2023, Vivian faced oral cancer at 89 with the same steadfast spirit. Her hospice nurse called her the most positive patient she had ever met. Even through pain, she never complained but trusted in God's will, often quoting Isaiah 55:8 -- "God's thoughts are higher than ours."
She continued to play hymns and praise God, reminding everyone of His goodness. Her final words reflected her lifelong trust: "Our Heavenly Father is absolutely faithful and reliable. He knows our every need and provides everything for us...The Lord knows how much you can accomplish. Just finish the race faithfully. Do not worry. One day, we will go back to heaven with happiness."
Vivian lived a life of quiet devotion -- humble, steadfast, and full of grace. She has finished her race and entered the joy of her Lord, leaving a legacy of love and faith that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
