Viviana Amelia Afonso, lovingly known as Mellie, passed away unexpectedly on November 10, 2025, in Fort Lauderdale, surrounded by her devoted daughters. She was 87 years old.
Born on August 28, 1938, Mellie was the daughter of the late Aida and Dr. Reis Dias. She grew up in Bombay, a place that shaped her early years with warmth and vibrancy, though she later considered New Jersey her true home. In her later years, she enjoyed the sun and serenity of Fort Lauderdale while also spending cherished time in Canada with family.
Mellie was married to the late Joaquim “Sunny” Afonso, with whom she built a life filled with love, resilience, and family. She is deeply missed by her daughters Karen (Gabriel) and Dawn (Frank), her grandchildren Erin (Roger), Dean, Mikaela, Quinn, and Ethan; and her siblings Jessica (Stephen), Savio (Brenda), and Fatima (Anthony). She is predeceased by her siblings Sebros (Martha) and Eva (Julius).
A lifelong enthusiast of daytime television, Mellie was General Hospital’s number one fan, never missing an episode. She also had a gift for sewing and took great joy in creating beautiful pieces for her loved ones. Her favourite colors—green and purple—were a special bond she shared with her grandchildren, a small but meaningful part of the many memories they hold dear.
Mellie will be remembered for her calm, selfless, and soft-spoken demeanor, always willing to help anyone who needed her. Her warmth and gentle presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.
