Wade Hampton Hitt, 88, formerly of Culpeper, Va. passed away at his residence in Chatham, Va., Sunday, February 24, 2008. Mr. Hitt was born August 29,1919 to Merry Aylor Hitt and Daisy H. Hitt in Culpeper, Va.; graduated from V.P.I. in 1940; retired from the U.S. Marine Corp as a Colonel after 26 years service; worked for Keller Manufacturing; started Culpeper Machine and Supply in 1973; served on the Board of Directors of Culpeper Memorial Hospital from 1971 until 1974 and was president and vice-president during his term. During Mr. Hitt's military career his medals and decorations included: Silver Star Medal; Legion of Merit with combat "V"; Purple Heart with one star; PUC with two stars; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign with six years; American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; UN Service Medal; Korean Service Medal with one star; National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation. Surviving Mr. Hitt is his wife Helen Shealy Hitt; son-in-law Darrell W. Bedgood; step granddaughter, Deirdre Bedgood Lawson; step grandson, Neill Bedgood; step great grandson, Arron Kyle Lawson; brother, Claude T. Hitt; nephews, Tommy and Lewis Hitt; nieces, Kathleen Wilkerson and Linda Browning; devoted friends, Charles and Linda Feagan. Preceding Mr. Hitt in death are his parents; first wife, Ann "Happy" Hitt and brothers John Henry Hitt and Merry Jackson Hitt. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 29, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Clore English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper, with Rev. Sanford Martin conducting the service. Interment will be in Little Fork Burying Grounds with military honors provided by the U.S. Marine Corp. Pallbearers will be former and present employees of Culpeper Machine Shop. Memorial contributions may be made to the Culpeper Regional Hospital Building Fund, P.O. Box 592, Culpeper, Virginia 22701.
