I somehow happened on this today and it made me so sad. Dr Jackson was the best teacher I had at Duke and I think of him whenever I read ANYthing.
He was my advisor and very patient with me.
He had the most endearing little scowl.

Jerry and I will miss this vibrant man. Our friendship goes back to the early 70s. Wally and Jerry were steady lunch buddies at Duke's Dope Shop (does it still exist?). Because of Wally's insatiable curiosity about life, literature and department politics, these were always stimulating occasions. We both missed him after our move to Arizona, and we feel that this was mutual. Pace, Wallace. There will never be another like you.

You did not go gentle into that good night. Or into any other, I suppose. That was your glory to many. Peace now, Wallace, to you and to those you loved.

I was a student in Wallace Jackson's English 56 course at Duke University when I was 19 years old--and I was never the same again. He was a brilliant, quirky, demanding teacher who expected no less of his students than he did of himself. He was a major influence in my life and I remain ever grateful to him; I was a much better college professor myself because I knew he believed in me.
I know he leaves a huge loss in the lives of Laura and Waltraud--as he does in mine. He would wish you love and solace. And do I.

Laura, I'm so incredibly sorry to hear about Wally. Dad and he were such good friends and I know how Dad revered him professionally. * I will let Nora and Dan know. Please do let us know when the funeral will take place. I certainly want to be there as do Nora, Cliff and Dan.
