Walter Joseph Amass, Jr, 72, of
Westminster, Maryland, passed away on September 13, 2025. Born on May 1, 1953, in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Walter Joseph Amass, Sr. and Phyllis Jean Reynolds Amass. Walter graduated from Catonsville Senior High School and went on to earn his associate's degree from Catonsville Community College. He worked as a mail clerk for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 2012. Walter's life was marked by service – to his family, his church, and his community. In his earlier years, Walter enjoyed playing golf and softball and served as president of the Catonsville Jaycees. He was deeply involved in supporting his daughters – coaching softball, driving to music lessons and practices, and volunteering with their Girl Scout troops. As proud grandpa, he loved spending as much time as he could watching his grandchildren in softball, volleyball, gymnastics, baseball, basketball, and soccer, as well as attending every music concert. He always had a word of encouragement or a pep talk at the ready after each event. A devoted Christian, he volunteered at Sandy Mount United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and men's group, served on various committees, and joyfully played Santa for the children at the church bazaar each year. Walter will be remembered for the steadfast love he showed his family, his compassion and generosity toward others, his excellent advice, and the way he never left a family gathering without sharing a hug and a kiss with his children and grandchildren. Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Shirley Jean Amass. He was the proud father of three daughters: Sarah (husband Brad) Jenkins, Jenny (husband Ben) Good, and Kelly Berrier. His greatest joy came from being "Grandpa" to his seven grandchildren – Dominic, Natalie, William, Autumn, Noah, Raelyn, and Zoey. He is also survived by his sisters Tricia (husband John) Manik and Barbara (husband George) Diefenbach and his brothers Tom (wife Judy) Amass and Jerry (wife Kathy) Amass, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. A memorial service will be held at Sandy Mount United Methodist Church on Friday, September 19, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with luncheon following in the church hall. Friends and family are invited to attend and share memories. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sandy Mount United Methodist Church or
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Walter's memory. Arrangements by Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services in Westminster.
