Walter Joseph Barta Jr., age 77, of Chesaning, passed away on April 14, 2025, at MyMichigan Medical Center in Saginaw.
Walt was born January 18, 1948, in Owosso, Michigan, the son of Walter Barta Sr. and Bessie (Kalisek) Barta. After graduating from Chesaning High School class of 1966, Walt went on to earn an associate's degree in crop and soil sciences from Michigan State University in 1968. During this time, he was proud to serve as the Michigan State FFA President from 1967-1968. He married Mary Jo Perry on April 19, 1969. They made their home on the family farm where he became a dedicated, lifelong farmer. Together, they raised three children, and their two sons still work the farm to this day. Walt was involved in the Chesaning FFA Alumni and was also the Chesaning Township Supervisor for 14 years. Walt was happiest when he could be outside. Besides farming he enjoyed hunting and supporting his children and grandchildren in their sporting events and livestock projects at the Shiawassee County Fair.
Walt is survived by his wife Mary Jo; children, Gary (Saundra) Barta, Amy (Mark) Bolin, and Jeff Barta; grandchildren, Jordyn (Justin) Ruggles, Erica (fiancé Brock Holek) Barta, and Luke Barta; great-grandson, Cooper Ruggles; sibling, Patricia (Clair) Weisenberger; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Sr. and Bessie Barta.
A memorial service will take place on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 7:00 pm with visitation starting at 1:00 pm until the time of service at McGeehan Funeral Home - Martin Chapel.
Memorial donations can be made to the wishes of the family.
