Kenneth Coon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McGeehan Funeral Homes Martin Chapel in Chesaning on Jan. 20, 2026.
Kenneth A. Coon Sr., age 79, formerly of Chesaning, passed away 9 days before his 80th birthday on January 18, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 27, 1946, in Owosso, Michigan, to Orville and Mildred (Wesley) Coon.

Kenneth graduated from Chesaning High School in 1964. He spent over 32 years working for General Motors, primarily at the Buick plant in Flint, before retiring. After retiring from his automotive career, Kenneth also worked as an escort driver for oversized loads for more than 20 years. He moved down to Brandon, Florida where he lived for the past 6 years before moving back home with his family.

Kenneth proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1968, surviving during the Vietnam War, completing three tours aboard the USS St. Clair City (LST-1028) as a Gunner's Mate, working with 40mm cannons. He remained active in veteran organizations throughout his life, serving as a member of Disabled American Veterans, VFW Burton Post 599, and the American Legion, where he was honored as an All-State Commander.

An avid traveler, Kenneth enjoyed scuba diving and traveled extensively for many years pursuing his love of the water. He also enjoyed pawn shops and thrift shops, was a devoted dog lover, and was known as a handy man who would try to fix anything he could.

Above all else, Kenneth loved and was incredibly proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him his greatest joy.

Kenneth is survived by his children, Kenneth (Kim) Coon Jr. and Mary (Tony) Flanner; his grandchildren, Richard (Jill) Coon, Nicholas Flanner, and Vanessa (Joshua) Cooper; his great-grandchildren, Oriana Flanner, Carson, Connor, and Isla Cooper; his siblings, David (Davana) Coon, Linda Krueger, Leonard Coon, and Alvin Coon Sr.; his life-long companion, Sheila Coon and his loyal dog Buddy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Vanessa Coon; his brother, Dennis Coon; his sister, Leta Coon; and his former wife and mother of his children, Margaret "Mickey" Kimmel.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday at 11:00 am at McGeehan Funeral Homes, Martin Chapel, with burial at Wildwood Cemetery to follow. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at McGeehan Funeral Homes, Martin Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made according to the wishes of the family.
