Walter Helms of Albany passed away peacefully at his residence on November 25, 2024, at the age of 80.
Born on November 21, 1944, in Thomasville, Alabama, to the late Lewie B. and Mary Etta Davis Helms, Walter graduated high school from Barbour County High School, and was drafted to serve in the Army during the Vietnam War.
After Vietnam, he began his career as a peanut inspector before joining Mosher in 1969. He later established Veterinary Medical Supply in 1978 with his partner Jerry Surles, and they successfully operated it until his retirement in 2005. He was respected for his work ethic and commitment to excellence in his field, leaving a lasting impact on those he served.
Beyond his professional life, Walter cherished time spent outdoors, fishing, and tending to his vegetable garden and flower beds. He also enjoyed woodworking, turning his creative ideas into beautifully crafted pieces.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, George Helms.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Eleanor Helms, of Albany, and his children: daughter Lisa Helms Pike of Albany, GA and son Pat Helms (Maryanne) of Woodstock, GA. His grandchildren: Abby Pike, Anna Helms, Jonathan Pike, Josh Helms, Emma Helms, and Will Helms; his siblings, Lewie Davis Helms (Sandra) of Headland, Alabama, Patricia Mitchell of Spartanburg, North Carolina, Wayne Helms (Sylvia) of Troy, Alabama, and sister-in-law Sharon Helms of Hope Hull, Alabama
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 1st, 2024 at Mathews Funeral Home from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM. Entombment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Dawson, GA. Pastor Jonathan LaBarge will officiate.
