Walter J. McBride Sr. was born August 26, 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Johnny and Helen McBride. He passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, January 21, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Helen McBride, his brothers John McBride Jr. and James Davis and his sisters Delores Jones and Gwendolyn Burgess.
Walter McBride was raised in the West End. He received his formal education from Courter Tech High School, a Cincinnati Public School.
At 6'7", Walter found his passion playing basketball where he pursued a career playing for the Travel Team of The Harlem Globe Trotters. After retiring from the Globetrotters, Walter worked faithfully and diligently for Kenner Toys and Clovernook School for The Blind until his vision deteriorated. Although Walter became legally blind, he remained independent. He rarely asked for assistance, so if he did, you knew he need a little help. He also was considered an activist in the community. In his spare time, Walter was a member of the Blind Bowler's League and travelled around the country. He was known for his high scores throughout the league. When he wasn't bowling, Walter enjoyed gardening and was a weekly visitor to Findlay Market. He also liked to listen to music, sports and talk shows.
Walter leaves behind to cherish his memories 3 sisters, Shirley SIbert, Mildred Montgomery and Marian Parrish, 2 brothers, David and Derrick McBride, 3 children and a step-daughter, Walter J. McBride Jr. (Kim), Wyseca McBride -Wilcoxson (Dwight), Inez Angel-McBride, Angela McBride Thompson (Steven). Walter has 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation is from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at the Walker Event Center, 3939 Reading Road, Cincinnati (45229). The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 11:00 am.
Interment will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45232.
