Walter Oberton Obituary
1950 - 2026
Walter "George" Oberton, age 75, of Grand Rapids, MN, died Saturday, January 3, 2026 at his home surrounded by family.
George was born in 1950 to Walter and Dorothy "Vi" Oberton in Riverdale, ND. He moved to Minnesota as a baby. He attended Cohasset Elementary School and Grand Rapids High School, graduating in 1968 where he was an accomplished cross country and track athlete. George and Donna Jones were united in marriage in 1975 in Brainerd, MN and made their home in Grand Rapids, MN. Together they raised their son, Kris, who was born in 1979.
George worked as the service and parts manager for Strowbridge Motors for many years and built his own businesses of Oberton Wholesale followed by Drywall Service. He enjoyed playing music, including guitar and bass, and played in a band with Kris for more than 10 years. George always enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, hunting, and camping. He especially loved talking to people about the Bible as one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
George is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Donna; son, Kristopher (Annie) Oberton; sisters, Violet "Marie" (George) Winckler, Charlotte (Vern) Bishop, and Susan (Curtis) Larson; brothers, Rodney (Bonnie) Oberton, Floyd "Ed" (Kelly) Oberton, Daniel (Diane) Oberton, Arthur Oberton, and Joseph (Robin) Oberton; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 35289 Foxtail Lane, Cohasset, MN.
