Walter Ernie Pope, a beloved figure in his community, passed away on June 29, 2025, at the age of 78 in Milan, Georgia. Born on July 29, 1946, in Hazlehurst, Georgia, Ernie dedicated his life to the land as a lifelong farmer and truck driver, establishing a legacy of hard work and resilience.

Ernie was not just known for his steadfast commitment to farming and driving; he was also recognized for his tenacity and independent spirit. He did things on his terms—his way or the highway. This unwavering determination was complemented by a generous heart; he was known to be tough as nails and hard as a rock, yet always willing to extend kindness to those in need. Ernie was the type of man who would give you the shirt off his back, a testament to his character and values.

In addition to his work in agriculture, Ernie served his community as a member of the Telfair County Board of Education for 20 years, demonstrating his commitment to the future of the young people in his area. He was also a member of Siloam Baptist Church.

Ernie leaves behind his cherished family: his children, Cindy (Lamar) Marshall of Milan, Chris (Rachel) Pope of McRae-Helena, and Catherine (Allen) Hammock of Milan; his brother, Randy (Joann) Pope of McRae-Helena; and his beloved grandchildren, Samantha Marshall, Wes Pope, Katy Rose Hammock, Andrew Pope, Morgan Marshall, and Aaron Hammock.  A uncle, Wendell Seabolt of Alamo and special friend, Lee "Byro" Scott of Milan also survive.

He is predeceased by his devoted wife, Dianne Selph Pope, and his parents, Ernest Dewey Pope and Kathleen Seabolt Pope.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on July 1, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Vaughn Funeral Home in McRae, Georgia. Following this, a funeral service will take place at Siloam Baptist Church in Milan, Georgia, on July 2, 2025, at 11:00 AM, followed by burial in the church cemetery.

Walter Ernie Pope will be remembered not only for his considerable achievements but also for the warmth and strength he brought to the lives of those around him. His legacy will undoubtedly endure in the hearts of his family and community.
