Lt. Col. Walter Joseph Schenning, USAF (Ret.), 92, of Hanahan, South Carolina, widower of Mary Green Schenning, entered into eternal rest Saturday, February 7, 2026. His Funeral Mass will be held Friday, February 13, 2026 at 1:00 pm at Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, 1106 Fort Drive, Hanahan, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road, Charleston. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 12, 2026 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel.
Walter was born September 8, 1933, in Baltimore, Maryland, son of the late Bernard Schenning and the late Emma Ibbitt Schenning. Mr. Schenning retired from the US Air Force in 1980. After retirement, he went to the Citadel for accounting, then earned his CPA and worked for 20 more years. He enjoyed helping his neighbors and would mow the neighbors' lawns even in his 80's. Mary and Walt loved Frank Sinatra and had a special bond with their grandchildren. Walt's family was the most important thing to him.
He is survived by his two daughters: Chris McLean (Marshall) of Summerville, SC and Cindy Edmondson (Kirby) of Charlotte; NC; seven grandchildren: James Schenning, Chris Schenning, Mara Edmondson, Reba Fey (Logan), Margot Schenning, Nick Mclean, and Adam Schenning; great-grandchild, Emma; daughter-in-law, Lisa Schenning; sister, Agnes Oldewurtel of Baltimore, MD; sister-in-law, Shirl Althoff (Bob) of Murrells Inlet, SC; and many loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, wife, Mary, two sons: Mark and Jim Schenning and siblings: Bernard Schenning and James Schenning.
