Coach Shallcross was a mentor to me during the time of my mother's illness and death. He trusted me to grapple with his boys after practice (great fun). He was a man of honor, both proportion and enthusiasm, and had a devilish sense of humor. I recall the following:

We were to wrestle Cranford when he solemnly pronounced that the Cranford coach had confided in him that his boys ran 5 miles a day. A wide grin spread across his face, " I bet they're excellent runners."

Upon beating a previously undefeated wrestler in the district tournament I immediately jumped on my coach and hugged him; he smiled and pointed me in the direction of my dad. he seemed to always know what was right. He gave importance to knowing his boys.

My son completed his wrestling career last year, winning multiple Mayor's Cups, State Championships, and an All American designation. He was a successful college wrestler, as well. My greatest pride is that he always treated his opponents with respect, and honored the sport.

I am sure that there is a second generation of wrestlers spawned by the good teachings of Mr. Shallcross. I hope that I have taught my son half of what my coach showed me by example.

My condolences to his lovely family.

In his life, Mr. Shallcross was a moral beacon for all who were touched by him. In our memories he lives as an ethical reference point by which we lead our lives.

Mr. Shallcross had a profound impact upon me, not just as a wrestling coach but as a role model who laid out a path by which to live one's life.
He was stoic and all business, but by his very stature imparted values I carried deeply from adolescence to adulthood.
He was always' missed from moment of my graduation to this poignant time of passing.

This is such a big loss. My deepest condolences to Walt's family. We knew Walt through Ron Frey and Bob Coulter - we lived in Roselle Park. My father was at Rutgers at the same time as Walt and they crossed paths many times thereafter. I was always in awe of him - such a great coach and a great man. One of my fondest memories is when he was at Pug William's wrestling clinic and helped me with my granby roll. He helped me understand the move, not just do it, and that made a lot of difference later on. Great man, rest in peace Coach Shallcross.
