Walter Eugene Shirley Jr., or "Gene" as he was known to many, a proud veteran and lifelong resident of southwestern Wisconsin, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 29, 2025, at the age of 85.

Born on May 5, 1940, in New Diggings, WI, to parents Walter Shirley Sr. and Mary (McNeil) Shirley, Gene graduated from Benton High School.

Gene bravely served his country in the U.S. Army until his medical discharge. He was stationed in Korea, where he worked as a mechanic before an injury ended his military service. Following his return, Gene built a career working for Consolidated Securities, transporting medical samples/labs for hospitals throughout the Stateline area until his retirement.

A resident of Shullsburg, WI, Gene had a passion for the simple things in life. He loved the quiet challenge of fishing, the hands-on satisfaction of working on vehicles, and the escape found in reading Western novels and watching movies. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him for his booming laugh and infectious smile, which could always brighten a room.

Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Georgia A. (McKibben) Shirley; his parents, Walter Sr. and Mary; and his siblings, Marjorie Cherry, Mary Alexander, Margaret Olson, Marion Portman, and Harvey Shirley.

He is survived by his three sons: Eugene Shirley and Thomas (Denise) Shirley both of Hazel Green WI, and Dan (Keri) Shirley Belleville WI, a sister Marie Galagher, and many nieces and nephews. Gene was also blessed with numerous cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Monday, October 6, 2025, from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. at Erickson Funeral Home (235 N. Judgement St, Shullsburg). Burial will follow at Shawnee Cemetery in rural New Diggings, WI where military graveside rites will be accorded by McCann-Richards American Legion Post #105 of Shullsburg. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com.
