Walter "Alton" Tuttle, age 95, of Mantua, NJ, formerly of Haddonfield and Camden, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Walter was born on December 21, 1929, in Collingswood to his beloved parents, Walter and Topsey Tuttle (née Jackson). He was raised in Camden, just behind Donkey's Place, where he made many cherished memories. Over the years, he held various local jobs and spent time helping his father - a skilled plasterer - renovate homes throughout the area.
A proud veteran, Walter served in both the U.S. Army and Air Force in the late 1940s and early 1950s. During a leave, he met his first and true love, Mary Alloway, at the five-and-dime store on Broadway in Camden. They married on November 13, 1948, and raised four children together.
Walter was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary; their first son, Walter Alton Tuttle, Jr., who passed away shortly after birth; his beloved son Robert Tuttle; and his cherished daughter Mary Eckel and her husband, Bob Eckel, with whom Walter shared a very special bond. He is survived by his loving children Susan McCarthy and Alton Tuttle.
He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Arline (Grisolia), whom he met while they both worked at the Courier-Post in Pennsauken. They married in January 1991 and shared quite a few happy years together, enjoying road trips and time with family.
After Arline's passing, Walter made his home in Mantua, NJ, where he enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved visits to the diner, thrifting, tending to his home, decorating, and sharing his humor and stories with anyone who stopped by. He continued to delight in horse races, trips to the casinos, playing his lottery numbers, and, above all, making those around him laugh.
In later years, Walter was joyfully reconnected with the daughter he never knew, Dolly (Hillman) Degano, who had been adopted. Although she passed away in 2019, he was deeply grateful for the opportunity to connect with her and treasured their conversations. He proudly displayed photos of Dolly and his granddaughter, Dee, alongside the many family pictures that filled his home.
Walter's grandchildren held a special place in his heart, with an especially close connection to Tom Eckel - his best buddy - and Jamie Barton - his adored granddaughter. Jamie and Tom lovingly cared for him over the past few years, creating many treasured memories with their "Pop."
Walter was the dear brother of the late William "Bill" Tuttle and is survived by siblings Topsey Bon Vardo, Laura Tuttle, Joan Williams, and Patricia Hayes, as well as many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family members.
Relatives and friends are invited to a graveside service on Wednesday, October 22, at 11:00 AM at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 550 Delsea Drive, Sewell, NJ 08080. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Walter Alton Tuttle, please visit our floral store.
