Walter J. Werner III

Walter Werner, was born in the Bronx, NY to Walter and Elizabeth Werner, and was the sibling to Beth and Richard. He graduated from East Meadow High School and then earned a BA in Accounting from Hofstra University. Walter was a Captain in the FDNY and served for 31 years. He was honored with the Steuben Association Medal for his bravery in a rescue operation in Forest Hills NY in 1991. He was also recognized for valor on 3 additional occasions and was a member of the Company Officers Association and the FDNY Steuben Association.

Walter met his wife Susan where they both worked at Central General Hospital in Plainview NY. They married in 1974, and raised 3 sons – Walter, Brian and James – in Kings Park. They have been blessed with 7 grandchildren and too many dogs. Walter loved to cruise with his wife and family, spend summers on the lake, was an amateur bourbon sommelier and an avid card player.

On March 5 th 2026, Walter succumbed to a 9/11 cancer as a result of his rescue efforts on that day and the ensuing months of recovery at ground zero.
