Walter Bergen Whittenburg, lovingly known as "Pop," was born on April 1, 1941, in Moodyville, Tennessee. A proud Tennessean through and through, after retiring from service (Army), he later made his home in Springfield, Tennessee, where he built a life rooted in family, service, and quiet strength.
Walter was a proud Vietnam veteran who served his country with courage and honor. His bravery earned him the Purple Heart, a testament to the sacrifice he made in defense of freedom. He carried the strength and resilience forged during his service throughout the rest of his life, embodying dedication, loyalty, and perseverance.
Above all else, Walter was a family man. Being called “Pop" was one of his greatest honors. He deeply loved his five great-grandsons, who brought immense joy and pride to his life. He would light up around them and loved the time he spent with them. The time he spent with them created memories that will be cherished for generations. His love for his family was nurturing, protective, and unconditional.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Geneva Whittenburg, brother Ralph Whittenburg, half-sister Lee Shaffer, and his sisters Janice Stinson, Patsy Perreira, Dean Rhule, and Lorraine Thompson. He leaves behind a family who will forever hold him close in their hearts and honor the example he set through his courage, devotion, and love. He is survived by his loving wife EunJa “Pat” Whittenburg, daughter Connie (Ray “Bubba”) Whittenburg-Watson, grandson Nick (Allison) Waston, granddaughter Alicia (Jason) Reynolds, great grandchildren: Stone, Jett, Montana, Cameron, and Klein. He is survived by his siblings: Jack (Phyllis) Whittenburg, Bonnie Bowman, and Virginia Brannon, as well as many nieces and nephews, especially nephews Eddie Whittenburg, Tim Stinson, Doug Stinson, and his nieces SungHui Overstreet and YoungSuk Burns whom will miss him dearly.
Walter will be remembered for his strong spirit, his servant's heart, and the quiet but powerful way he showed up for the people he loved. His legacy lives on, not only in the medals he earned, but in the family he cherished and the values he instilled in them.
