Walter Michael Winiewicz, affectionally known as "Big Guy" passed away peacefully on December 31, 2025, in
Raleigh, North Carolina. A man of unwavering faith and infectious humor, Walter's life was a testament to love, service, and commitment to his family and community. He was born on March 29, 1942, in
Buffalo, New York, to the late Joseph Lawrance and Mary Bernice Wojda Winiewicz.
Walter's early years in Buffalo laid a strong foundation for a life characterized by dedication and hard work. After receiving his bachelor's degree in Accounting, from Canisius College in Buffalo, he proudly served his country as a Lieutenant in the US Army Signal Corps. His career path led him to IBM, where he retired after more than 30 years in facilities management. Walter's professional achievements were matched by his commitment to community service. He held the roles of President, Vice President, and Board member of the Prevent Blindness NC Chapter, contributing significantly to the organization's mission.
Walter's involvement with St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church was a reflection of his deep spiritual life. As a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Stephen Ministries, he provided comfort and guidance to many. His dedication to his faith was further exemplified by his active participation in the Knights of Columbus, where he found fellowship and purpose.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph Lawrance Winiewicz III and Michael Drew Winiewicz. Walter's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife of 62 years, Joyce Karelus Winiewicz, and their children: Michelle Ann Burkhardt and her husband Michael, William Walter Winiewicz and his wife Deborah, and Christopher Michael Winiewicz and his wife April. His grandchildren, Jacquelyn Anne, Daniel Ryan, Katharine Rose, Christian William, and Ava Reese, will remember their grandfather as a beacon of love and laughter.
Walter is also survived by his brothers, Peter Jan Winiewicz and his wife Sandy, Nicholas Bruce Winiewicz and his wife Natalie; his sisters-in-law, Carol Winiewicz and Sharon Winiewicz; and many cherished nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss his guidance and wit.
Those who knew Walter will recall a man with a great sense of humor and a strong faith. He loved to read and travel in his earlier years, and he found joy in cooking and bird watching. His loyalty to family and friends was unwavering, and his presence brought warmth to any gathering.
Walter Michael Winiewicz lived a life that was faith-filled, funny, and loving. His impact on those around him was profound, and his memory will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial gathering will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 4 - 7 pm at Bright Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated the following day, Friday, January 9, 2026, at 11 am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh. He will be laid to rest in the church's columbarium following the mass with military honors.
