Wanda F. Hess

Wanda Elaine (Funk) Hess, 89, went to Heaven on Sunday, June 9, 2024. A faithful servant of God, she always had a helping hand and encouraging words. She was very close to her church family at Highview Church of God, where she attended Bible study every week. Born in Lititz to the late Irvin Elwood and Annetta (Kreider) Funk, she graduated from Manheim Twp. High School.
Wanda married Glenn Stauffer Hess in 1952. They were married for 69 years at the time of his death in 2021. In 1966, they started Hess's Snack Wagon and delivered lunch to many workers in the Quarryville, Coatesville and Oxford areas. This evolved into delivering wholesale sandwiches to convenience stations from Rehoboth, DE to Harrisburg, PA.
When Wanda's brother, "Woody" Funk, formed the Buck Tractor Pulls, the family ran the concessions stand for the first 17 years. Wanda employed many young people from the community, nurturing their skills and encouraging them to be the best they could be.
Wanda was a lifetime member of the Quarryville Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary, helping to prepare food and serve at benefit dinners. She also volunteered at the Quarryville Library for 7 years.
During the summers, she canned and froze vegetables and fruits, making jelly and chow chow from Glenn's garden. Food was always Love in Wanda's family. At Christmas time, she would make baskets of her summertime efforts and give them to her neighbors and friends. Making Christmas cookies was always a memorable event with her.
Family gatherings and outings with friends were very important to Wanda. "Thank You" to all who lovingly drove her to breakfasts, lunches and church events. Birthdays and anniversaries were never missed by Wanda- making sure she sent cards was a very loving mission of hers.
Wanda is survived by 5 children: David L. Hess (Linda), Sandra L. Ross (Robert, Jr.), Glenda L. Findley (Dennis), Barbara Jo Swisher (Larry), and Tammy S. Goodwin (Kevin); 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and a sister, Gloria Mathiot. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, I. Elwood "Woody" Funk, Jr. and a brother-in-law, Harold "Goose" Mathiot.
A Memorial Service will take place at High View Church of God, 2470 Leaman Rd., Ronks, PA 17572 on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.
