Wanda Jo Hinton McKee passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, October 5, 2025. She was born on September 7, 1935, in
Flemingsburg, Kentucky; having just turned 90 years old last month.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, Noel H. Hinton and Mildred Storey Hinton; her son, Robert McKee; her son-in-law, Paul Shriver; and Virgil L. McKee. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Shriver; her daughter-in-law, Kendra McKee; her grandson, Tyler McKee and his wife, Mayra; and her two adorable granddaughters, Olivia and Elena.
As a military wife they traveled to Germany and France for three years in the mid-60's: and while living there, visited several other countries. Upon returning to the United States, their first assignment was New Cumberland Army Depot in Pennsylvania for two years and were then transferred to the Pentagon and lived in Alexandria, VA.
Wanda started her working career as a receptionist/secretary at a business school for two years, then to the Alexandria Hospital HR Department as a Nursing Employment Coordinator. She retired from the hospital after 20 years and returned to Kentucky to be with her mother, where she lived for 20+ years.
With her mother's passing, her children thought it best she move closer to them, therefore, Wanda moved to Lewes, Delaware, 5 miles from her daughter and son-in-law (Rehoboth Beach, DE) and close enough for weekend visits from her son, his wife, and grandson (Fairfax, VA).
Wanda adapted very well to her new totally independent senior apartment complex in Lewes and actively participated in their quarterly pot luck dinners in the Great Room, playing bingo and cards, and participated in the Friday night happy hour (with her diet coke in hand). Her last couple of years were in an assisted living facility, which again, was very socially active, with Wanda having no "free" time, busy all day with breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining room and conversation, leading to an activity in the afternoon.
During her life she was a volunteer in many aspects of life – PTA, Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader and joining the church choir overseas. Back in Flemingsburg, she served as secretary for the Flemingsburg Christian Church Women's Fellowship and volunteered at the gift shop run by the Fleming County Hospital Women's Auxiliary.
Wanda had a beautiful voice, was a wonderful listener; she always said "I don't know why people tell me their life stories" (it was because she listened). She continued her social life when she returned to Kentucky as she and friends would enjoy the local theater and even ventured to Cincinnati for shows. Wanda ejoyed reading, watching The Voice and Dancing with the Stars, the Lifetime and Hallmark channels, and of course, her weekly visit to the beauty shop, her hair having to be perfect every day.
A memorial service and burial will be held in the spring in Kentucky.
