Wanda Young

Wanda (Hatch) Young, age 92 of Wakonda passed away peacefully at Wakonda Heritage Manor on April 19th, 2025.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, April 23, at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene, with visitation beginning at 9:00am. Burial will follow in St. Columbkill Catholic Cemetery rural Wakonda.

She was born April 18th, 1933, in Wakonda to Kenneth and Myrtle (Christiansen) Hatch. On September 1st, 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Edward Young and raised 5 children, Jeff, Kathy, Valerie, Julie and Mark. With the exception of about a year in Kentucky while Ed served in the army, she lived her entire life within 5 miles of Wakonda.

Twenty-eight years of Wanda’s life were spent working as a seamstress for several sewing factories and ultimately became plant manager for Raven Industries in Beresford until her retirement in 1998.

Wanda was involved with many clubs throughout her life and volunteered her time for many years with the Wakonda quilters. She loved playing cards with family and friends. The grandchildren have many fond memories of playing board games and beating grandma every once in awhile.

Wanda took great pride in her family. She is survived by her children Jeff (Joan) of Kennewick, WA, Kathy (Jim) Glidden of Wamego, KS, Valerie (Doug) Anderson of Cornville, AZ, Julie (Greg) Forney of Spirit Lake, IA, and Mark (Christine) of St. Cloud, MN, 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ed, infant daughter, Nancy, her parents, her sister Betty Bohlmann, and grandson, Travis Anderson.
