Warren "Gus" Jones, 85 of
Holland Patent, NY passed away February 14, 2026, in the comfort of his home.
Born in
Utica, NY, on January 24, 1941, Gus was the eldest of eight children to the late Gwen and Helen Bathke Jones. He grew up working the family farm in Wethersfield, where he developed the strong work ethic and sense of responsibility that would define his life. A proud graduate of Holland Patent High School's class of 1959, Gus excelled in sports and his claim to fame was when he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1959, later training in Vero Beach, Florida.
Gus spent multiple summers working for Cranes Silo and dedicated 35 years to Chicago Pneumatic before his retirement. In 1962, he met Sharon Moorby, a beautiful nurse who became the love of his life. They married on September 21, 1962, and together raised three children. The couple cherished hosting holiday gatherings and traveling, but most of all, they loved relaxing on their porch with gin and tonics, enjoying the view of their property.
Gus played for the Trenton Mets and Vans Tavern fast pitch teams until retiring from the game at age 43, after which he took up golf and became a proud member of Glass Hill. Known for his perfectly manicured lawn, he was often seen mowing every other day.
Gus was a devoted fan of Elvis Presley, Muhammad Ali, the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills, and, of course, a good gin. He was a familiar face at Vans Tavern, Hotel Moore, and the Pub, where he enjoyed playing Quick Draw and sharing laughs with friends. The last five years saw Gus wintering in Florida at his daughter's and son's homes, where he created treasured memories and new friendships.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Morb, his great-granddaughter Addison, and his son Dennis. He also reunites with close friends Powsie Williams, Ronnie Payne, Cookie Hoffman, Brian Wall, and Bruce Taylor who passed before him.
Gus is survived by his three children: Cindy (Scott) Ingersoll, Mick (Heather) Jones, and Jennifer (Matthew) Hughes; and by his cherished grandchildren: Derek (Alissa) Jones, Erica (Rich) Zysk, Ashley (Matt) Romanowski; and great-grandchildren Brayden, Tessa, and Benjamin. He leaves behind seven siblings and their spouses, his sister- and brother-in-laws, several cousins, nieces, and nephews who lovingly called him Uncle Beer! Leaving behind numerous close friends: Butch, Poose, Urbanik, Earl, Shannon, Al, Russian, Cedar and the Synakowski family.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to his nurse practitioner, Lenore Lampert, for her exceptional care and unwavering support.
Our Dad lived his life "his way"-and you can take that to the bank! A celebration of his life will be held during warmer weather at the family home. Burial will take place in Holland Patent Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Barneveld Fire Department.
