John Gorczynski Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc. - Whitesboro on Feb. 11, 2026.
John Gorczynski

Rome, NY

John Gorczynski, 72, of Rome, NY passed away on February 8, 2026. He was born on August 19, 1953 to Joseph and Elizabeth (Dziechciowski) Gorczynski.

John graduated from New York Mills High School in 1971, and then graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College. Shortly after, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. "Once a Marine, Always a Marine," John then graduated from Syracuse University for a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering. In 1980, he married the love of his life Michelle, and they would go on to have two children together. He had a long and prosperous career at Whitacre Engineering and American Iron contributing to the construction of buildings and public works projects we all pass by every day. John was on the board of directors of the Mohawk Valley Builders Exchange for 14 years and served as its president from 2006-2007. John was active in forming the Mohawk Upstate Ironworkers Employee Association and served as Management Trustee on the Upstate NY Ironworkers Pension and Healthcare Fund.

Not just a career man, John was devoted to civic leadership including a long run as a coach in the Oriskany Little League, umpire ("you'rrrrre out!"), Boy Scout Leader, Knights of Columbus Member, Member of the Oriskany American Legion and a parishioner at St Paul's Church in Whitesboro. He was always community-minded. In the spirit of his curiosity and ingenuity, John also enjoyed woodworking, furniture-making and home improvement in his spare time.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle Murphy Gorczynski; children, Stephanie (Tanner) Sullivan and Nicholas (John Marcinuk) Gorczynski; grandchildren, Jack, Ivy and August John Sullivan; siblings, Jeff (Nancy) Gorczynski and Dr. Amy Gorczynski; sister-in-law, Patricia Murphy; brother-in-law, James Murphy (Toni); nephew, Richard Murphy; and nieces, Sarah Hartley and Rebecca Gorczynski.

He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Gorczynski, his mother-in-law, Helen Murphy and his brother-in-law, John Murphy.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all the doctors and medical practitioners who went above and beyond with their care and attention, especially Dr. Reagan and the entire staff at the (CAR) T-cell treatment program at the Wilmot Cancer Center, Rochester, NY. You gave us many more years with John.

As John would say affectionately to all he encountered, "It's been a real slice of life."

Calling hours will be Thursday, February 12th, from 2pm to 4pm at Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc., 40 Main Street, Whitesboro, NY 13492. John's funeral mass will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church on Friday, February 13th at 9:30am. Burial will immediately follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc.

I'm so sorry! I worked with John for 6-7 years and he was a great guy. We've kept in touch since then too. I'll truly miss that man, his sense of humor, his stories...just everything about him. I'm so sorry for your loss! Jill Cerchia (worked with John at Whitacre)
