Watson "Bud" Andrew Hardaker passed peacefully on October 26, 2025 at the age of 102.
Born November 11, 1922 in Holyoke, Massachusetts to Frank and Jennie (Sharron), Bud was a proud and loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor, and friend to many.
A 1941 graduate of Kearny High School, Bud attended the Newark College of Engineering, where he discovered his lifelong passion for machinery. During World War II, he voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service, and served from December 10, 1942 until December 7, 1945. As a Fireman First Class stationed in Brisbane, Australia, he worked tirelessly to keep submarines in top condition-ensuring they could return safely to sea.
After his service, Bud built a long and respected career as a machinist, cost estimator, and plant superintendent at Otis Elevator, Aircraft Radio, ITT, McGraw Edison, and Cessna Aircraft, contributing to the production of vital aeronautical and wartime equipment. His dedication and craftsmanship contributed to the nation's wartime success.
Bud and his wife, Charlotte (Meistrell), raised their family in Pompton Plains. After retiring in 1985, he spent 14 wonderful years as a crossing guard at Pequannock Valley Middle School, becoming a friendly face the students looked forward to seeing each day.
Bud's greatest joy came from life's simple pleasures-sharing stories, singing from the heart, enjoying a big crock of French onion soup, tending his garden, and cheering on his beloved Giants and Yankees. He once played semi-pro soccer in Kearny's English League and carried his love of sports throughout his years.
He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Jennie; brothers Lt. Col. Jack, Kenneth, and Stanley; wife Charlotte Hardaker (Meistrell); son James Hardaker, Esq.; and daughter Lynne Hardaker, RN.
Bud is lovingly remembered by his children Sharron Garner, Christine Conahay, and Kenneth Hardaker (Dara); seven grandchildren-Jessica, Brandon, Brittany (Clint), Jenelle (Anthony), Taylor (Mike), Angelina, and Daniel-and four great-granddaughters, Madison, Mackenzie, Addison, and Olivia.
Friends and family may celebrate Bud's life on Wednesday, October 29th from 10AM-2PM at Scanlan's: Where Life is Celebrated, Pompton Plains. Graveside services will follow at the First Reformed Church Cemetery, Pompton Plains, where he will be laid to rest beside his wife, Charlotte, and children, James and Lynne.
Bud's endless wit, love for his family and nation, and steadfast spirit touched everyone who knew him. His stories, songs, and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
