Wayland D. Clancy

CLANCY - Wayland D. Clancy, beloved father, husband and grandfather, a resident of Albuquerque since 1975, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010. He was born July 31, 1925, and served in the U.S. Navy in WW II as well as Korea. A very patriotic man, Wayland was proud to serve his country and was an excellent father, husband and provider for his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Byron and Lily Clancy; older brother, Maurice; grandson and best buddy, Mitchell Campbell; as well as his nephew, Patrick Hambrick of New Orleans, LA. Wayland is survived by his wife, Doris; daughters, Lynda Clancy, husband, Michael Campbell of Albuquerque, Sherry Clancy of Las Vegas, NM; sister, Maryan and husband, George Hambrick of Temple, TX; and nephew, Mike Hambrick, wife, Miriam of Washington, DC and Florida. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Redus Holland of Los Alamos, NM and three sons, one daughter preceded Redus in death; his sister-in-law, DeAnn Clancy of Philadelphia, PA, her sons and daughters-in-law; and nieces and nephews. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics Engineering, he was employed by General Electric for 17 years, having worked as design engineer on missile guidance radar systems in Syracuse, NY; as Program Manager on satellite tracking and computer systems in Oklahoma City, OK; and as Reliability Engineer on the NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Program in Houston, TX. Wayland was an integrated part of the history making Apollo missions. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 1986, with 20 years service, with his last assignment being Assistant Manager for Technical Support at the Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center. After retirement, he ran his wife's company; Visi-Comm Systems, which was engaged in sales of visual and tactile assistive devices for the deaf and hearing impaired. He was retired as Lieutenant Commander from the U.S. Navy Reserve with 20 years service. He served three years active duty during WW II as radar officer aboard the battleship South Dakota in the Pacific Theater, and for two years during the Korean conflict as damage control officer on the aircraft carrier Corregidor. Wayland was an active member of the Montgomery Boulevard Church of Christ, the New Mexico Speech and Hearing Association (NMSHA), New Mexico Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (NMRID), New Mexico Association of the Deaf (NMAD), Self-Help for Hard of Hearing (SHHHH), Coalition for Disability Rights, and on the Board of Directors for Southwest Business, Industry and Rehabilitation Association (SWBIRA). He received numerous awards and commendations from of these organizations for his efforts in service to the deaf and hearing community. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 26, 2010, 2:00 p.m., at La Vida Llena - Carter Hall, 10501 La Grima de Oro NE.
