Wayne at the age of 92, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. He was loved by his family. He lived in Summerville, SC and was born in Ravena, OH in March of 1932. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul, and Norma Bates; sister, Betty Jane; and his first wife Phyllis Bates who died in 2005. They were married 49 ½ years and raised their family in Summerville, SC. 

He is survived by his wife, Dale Bates, of 16 years who he loved and cherished very much. He has three daughters: Dana Laidlaw (Elwood Dise), Bonita Tavares (David), Patti Horne (Archie) and his five grandchildren: Bryan Laidlaw, Ryan Hampton, Nick Laidlaw, Sara Carter (Hunter), Austin Horne, and his 2 step grandchildren: Kaci Freeman (Chris), and Andrew Horne. He also has 6 great grandchildren. His wife, Dale has four children: Ann Marie Griner (Terry), Michelle Dunlavy (Ty), Melinda Livie (Jason), Jonathan Nary (Maggie) and grandchildren, Amy White (Chris), Chevy Griner, Mary-Ann Jacobs, Tyler Dunlavy, McKenzie Livie, Tanner Dunlavy and Hartley White. 

Wayne was an Engineer by trade and was the owner of a carpet cleaning and installing business before retiring. He later worked as a tour guide in the City of Charleston. He loved to be on the water and owned a boat most of his life. He enjoyed water skiing as a young man and loved to dance. He also loved to play cards and travel. He was in the military and served in Korea. He is a former member of the Charleston Elks Lodge #242.

He was very loved and cherished by his family. He taught us many life lessons that will live on with our family for a lifetime.

 A Celebration of Life drop in will be held Wednesday, August 28th from 4pm to 7pm at the Charleston Elks Lodge #242, 1113 Sam Rittenberg Blvd, Charleston, SC.
