Wayne Eugene Beard, aged 81, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2025, surrounded by family in his home. He was born April 23, 1944, in Sister Bay, Wisconsin to Harvey and Lorraine (Tanck) Beard.
Known affectionately by many as "Mr. Beard," "Wayno," or simply "Wayne," he was a beloved figure in his community. Wayne took great joy in connecting with others and seemed to find people he knew everywhere he went. His conversations, whether with friends old or new, were always full of laughter, kindness, and plenty of puns. Throughout his life, Wayne built a vast network of friendships, each one treasured deeply.
Growing up in rural Door County, Wayne labored long hours alongside his family, learning the value of hard work and dedication. Whether on the farm or on jobs in the area, Wayne's strong work ethic and determination shaped him into a man who took pride in getting things done and in doing them well.
While attending UW-Stout, Wayne met Karen, the love of his life. They were married in November of 1965, and shared nearly 60 years together, working, gardening, farming and undertaking a multitude of projects, in addition to raising their four children. Their love extended to their grandchildren, who were an ever-present joy in Wayne's life. He was a frequent attendee at school events, sports games, and family gatherings, always with a crinkling smile and a firm handshake.
Teaching Industrial Arts first in Birchwood and then in Osseo, Mr. Beard was known as a no-nonsense teacher. Shop safety was paramount, and it was a memorable occasion to hear his deep booming voice when shenanigans occurred in his class. But, despite his rather intimidating presence, he had a reputation for genuinely caring about the well-being of the young people he taught, and his influence and interest in them continued well beyond their time in his classes.
He retired from teaching at age 55, but for Wayne, retirement was not about the end of work; it was about having more time to work on his true passion: carpentry. A skilled woodworker, he inherited his love for the craft from his father. His hands brought to life a range of projects, from stairways and cabinets to entire homes. One could say his craftsmanship is embedded into the very fabric of Osseo.
An avid fisherman, Wayne was often seen on his way to or from a fishing outing, most often accompanied by friends or grandchildren. Of the many photos he carried with him, while many were of family and carpentry projects, a fair number were snapshots documenting recent catches.
Wayne's legacy of love and friendship will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. His vibrant spirit, genuine warmth, and love for life made an indelible mark, and he will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Karen; his children Raneau (Craig), Sabreana (Karl), Matthew (Kelleen), and Rebecca (Alex); his grandchildren Jacob (Dominique), Kyle (Kenzie), Tyler, Christopher, Samuel (Anna), Benjamin, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Alexandria, and Gabriella; and his great-grandchildren, Aiyden, Samuel, Maddisyn, Levi and Brecken. He also leaves behind his brothers Myron (Andi) and Randy (Michelle), and his sister Sandra, brothers-in-law, George, Manfred (Denise), Gary (Penny), Erich (Julie) and sisters-in-law, Heidi (Dave), Ursula (Galen) and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Lorraine, and his brother Bryan.
Wayne's last request was to have one more party, filled with friends and family. In honor of his memory, a celebration of life will be held at the family farm in Osseo on July 19th, starting at 1:00 PM. Please come and help us make this party a big one.
A final burial will be held privately with the family.
