Wayne Edward Chambers passed away March 17, 2025 with Joann at his side.
He was born December 30, 1940 in
Albany, Oregon to Elbert and Esther (Meyer) Chambers. Wayne married Joann Breedlove on July 6, 1963 in
Albany, Oregon. Also in 1963, Wayne graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture. Wayne went to work on the family farm in Dever-Conner.
Wayne was one of the earliest and most ardent collaborators with the Hazelnut Breeding Program at Oregon State University. He shared a passion for developing improved kernel cultivars with excellent flavor and blanchability. He supported the breeding program in many ways from testing promising elite selections on his farm to hosting tours for scientists and growers from around the world. He was a mentor, cheerleader and dear friend to the hazelnut breeding team at OSU.
For Wayne, farming was not just a job, but a way of life. He never complained about going to work and felt strongly that it was his responsibility to care for the land so it would remain healthy and productive for future generations. Wayne frequently stressed that "timing" was crucial to successful farming.
Wayne saw value in education and activities that kept young people engaged and curious. Over the years, Wayne and Joann have supported many youth activities including the Boys and Girls Club of Albany and 4H. Wayne believed strongly in higher education and helped many attend college by providing scholarships at community college and university levels.
Wayne loved to have a plan and even during the last week of his life, he was asking "what's the plan?" There is so much more that could be said about Wayne's life. Because he was such an understatement himself, the rest of his story will remain unwritten.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Joann; sister, Marilyn (Dave) Graffenberger; brother, David (Darlene) Chambers; nephews, Brian Graffenberger and Eric Chambers.
There will be a 2:00 pm Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 26 at the United Presbyterian Church of Albany. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Albany, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 SW Washington St,
Albany, Oregon 97321.
