Wayne Chevrie Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Zahoran Funeral Home - South Bend on Feb. 19, 2026.
Wayne Thomas Chevrie Jr., a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, cherished brother, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026.

Wayne was the kind of man who made life richer for everyone around him. Above all else, he loved his family. He shared 52 beautiful years of marriage with his wife, Barb Voynovich Chevrie, who preceded him in death on July 10, 2025. Their marriage was built on love, family, and friends, creating a lifetime of cherished memories. He was a lifelong printer, starting his career with his father, Wayne Sr. at A-1 Printers and then retiring from Memorial Hospital.

A lifelong sports fan, Wayne was especially passionate about the Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame football. Few things brought him greater joy than watching classic Cubs games, particularly the unforgettable 2016 World Series, which he proudly rewatched more than 50 times. His loyalty to Notre Dame football was legendary, and Saturdays in the fall were reserved for cheering on the Fighting Irish.

Wayne was an avid reader who enjoyed getting lost in a good book, always eager to learn, relax, and escape into new stories.

Wayne was also known for his competitive spirit and playful sense of humor, whether on the bowling lanes or the golf course. A clutch bowler, he took great pride in besting his brothers, Larry and Tim, along with his friends at St. Anthony's Bowling League, always enjoying the camaraderie as much as the competition. On the golf course, Sweet Swinging Wayne spent more than 15 years golfing alongside his trusted partner and dear friend, Tom Hinkle. Together, they were original members of their golf league, building a lasting tradition of friendly rivalry, loyalty, and camaraderie. Their countless rounds created a treasure trove of stories and memories that will forever be cherished.

One of Wayne's greatest joys was his only granddaughter, Kendall Chevrie. His face would light up the moment she entered the room, and their time together was filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable moments that will be treasured always.

Among his circle of friends, Wayne was famous for his spirited rendition of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," especially his unforgettable delivery of "Five golden rings," a joyful tradition that perfectly captured his humor, warmth, and larger-than-life personality.

He is survived by his loving children, Lori Chevrie of Indianapolis, IN; Karla Chevrie of Indianapolis, IN; and Nick and Danielle Chevrie, and granddaughter, Kendall Chevrie of New Carlisle, IN. He is also survived by his siblings, Sharon Hudak, Larry Chevrie, and Tim Chevrie(Rita Chevrie), as well as his many nieces and nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Wayne leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, loyalty, and unforgettable moments. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.

There will be a Celebration of Life on April 11th, 2026 at the American Legion Post 50 1633 N Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN 46628 beginning at 2:00pm
