Wayne D. Ellis, age 81, lifelong resident of Bridgewater and owner of Bridgewater Auto Body, died peacefully after a lengthy illness on Nov. 17.
Wayne was the loving son of the late Benjamin and Laura L. (Knight) Ellis and grew up on the family farm off of Pleasant Street in Bridgewater; B.F. Ellis Farm. Growing up on a farm with seven siblings taught him the life skills that would make him a successful business person. He learned from an early age that "fixing" always started with thinking, then doing, sometimes failing; but always trying again until you got it right. His Dad taught him how to use wrench on tractors and farm equipment. He also taught him how to grow a great tomato or cucumber even if the soil was not perfect.
Wayne was a graduate of BR Class of 1959 and proud Army Reservist. He would raise his children in Bridgewater alongside their mother Cynthia. Wayne was a gifted mechanic who prided himself on his work and most importantly being fair and honest. These were traits he instilled in his sons as both Stephen and Rich worked alongside him. He enjoyed showing off his cars such as the '57 Corvette, '66 GTO, or the '40 Ford Coup and was a longtime member and supporter of the Wheels of Time. Wayne was very sociable and loved when people stopped by his shop. It was always amazing he got so much work done because he had time for everyone.
Outside of the shop Wayne enjoyed his gun collection. He was a proud NRA member and owned a variety of collectable firearms. He earned the nickname of "Buzzard" because he often found himself causing shenanigans with his family or friends. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, Aruba, New Hampshire, his beloved dogs, oldies music, and his friends in the Masons and Vet's Club. He was a true "townie" and will be missed by all who knew him.
Wayne was the loving companion of over 20 years to Roberta Vernaglia of Brockton and loving father of Richard W. Ellis of Bridgewater and Stephen D. Ellis and his wife Meagan of RI. Proud "Paps" of Jason and Lincoln. Brother of Leonard Ellis of ME, and the late Calvin, Etta Whynot, John, Benjamin, James, and Gertrude. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and relatives.
All are cordially invited to a wake at the Chapman Funerals and Cremations, 98 Bedford St. Bridgewater (Prophett Chapel) on Monday Nov. 22 from 4-7pm. A Funeral Home service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 10am followed by a burial at Scotland Cemetery, Bridgewater.
