Wayne Emerson Engel

Dr. Wayne Emerson Engel, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at James Madison University, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025, in Harrisonburg, Virginia at the age of 93, leaving a legacy of scholarship, service, and deep personal connection with people around the world.
Wayne was born on October 10, 1932, in Berlin, Ohio. He grew up on the family farm just down the road from the Lutheran church and remained deeply connected to his roots in Holmes County throughout his life.
He served in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps during the Korean War and later served as President of the Virginia Psychological Association and served on the Virginia Board of Medicine from 1980 to 1990, contributing his expertise to public service.
He earned his bachelor's degree from Capital University, a master's degree from Kent State University, and a Doctorate from the University of Minnesota, specializing in Clinical Psychology. He later joined the faculty at James Madison University, where he served with distinction and was named Professor Emeritus upon retirement.
His passions included teaching/mentoring, traveling, cooking, the arts, making friends, conservation, and promoting international cooperation. Wayne was significantly involved at Muhlenberg Lutheran Church in Harrisonburg, where his faith and community engagement were central to his life. Wayne visited numerous countries across most continents throughout his life, forming many lifelong friendships along the way.
Wayne was preceded in death by his brother, Dean Engel, and his sister, Mary Margaret Parker.
He is survived by Mary Kesecker, his loving partner of more than 50 years, and his children, Dawn Lindley, Ginger Ameigh, and Roger Engel.
Wayne is remembered by many for his charm and wit and for living a life marked by love, adventure, and laughter. He made a lasting impact on the Harrisonburg community and the many people he loved.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., at the chapel at Kyger Funeral Home.
