Andale, Kansas - Hieger, Wayne Mathew, 88, passed away on April 10, 2022. He was born on July 27, 1933, in Andale, Kansas to Paul and Ann (Scheer) Hieger. After graduating from Cathedral High School, Wayne joined the US Navy. He served from 1952 to 1956 and spent most of his time aboard the USS John C. Butler and USS Dunn County. While based in San Diego, Wayne surprisingly met a young lady from Andale, Nancy Yakshaw, who was studying to become an x-ray technician.
Married on May 25, 1957, at St Joseph Catholic Church, Wayne and Nancy chose Andale to raise their family. Wayne worked his entire career at Boeing before retiring in 1989. He was active on the Andale City Council, first as a councilman, and then as mayor. Wayne was instrumental in building the Andale city pool, the tennis courts, and new playground equipment for the city park. In addition, the infrastructure of Andale was greatly improved by the construction of a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant.
Wayne served on the Renwick USD 267 School Board from 1995 to 1999. During these years he advocated for the construction of new high schools and athletic fields for both Andale and Garden Plain. After his years of community service, Wayne and Nancy opened Main Street Liquor in Andale.
Wayne is preceded in death by his wife Nancy, parents, Paul Hieger and Ann (Hieger) Strunk, brother Roy Hieger, and daughter-in-law, Janet Hieger. He is survived by daughter Stephanie Bieberly (Terry) of Wichita, KS, and sons, Steve (Kim) of Wichita, KS, Scott of Dallas, TX, Stan (Traci) of Tulsa, OK, and Stuart (Kristie Howard) of Salina, KS.
Wayne was very proud of his thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He enjoyed golf, Table Rock Lake, Creede, CO., and spending time with family and friends. A Rosary will be held on Monday, April 18 at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass, at 10:00 a.m. - both of which will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Andale, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S Market, Wichita, KS 67202, and Renwick USD 267 Education Foundation, 600 Rush Ave, Andale, KS 67001.
